TIME PERIOD: 1933-1945
LOCATION: Nazi Germany

Bebop, Jazz, and the everpopular Jitterbug (also known as the lindy hop) dance, were banned by the Nazi's as being American influences. Members of the French Underground (a movement group against the nazi's) , therefore would  meet at basement dance clubs (normally underground) known as Discotheques. Here they would dance to swing music, (played on a single turntable operated by a DJ), hidden safetly away from the oppression of the Nazis.

  1. That's awful that the Nazis banned so many forms of dance! Dance is such an important part of expression, so that seems awful that it wasn't allowed. And I never knew that that was how Discotheques came around! I wonder, were any people ever caught in Discotheques and had them shut down? It just seems so ridiculous that people had to sneak around to just have fun and do what they loved.
